"Our greatness, our talent has never been the question. It's been a matter of grappling for control over what we do."

i am...
Malik Salaam is a writer-director carving out a distinct lane where arthouse cinema collides with the raw emotional truth of the hood. His work blends intimate character studies with street-rooted realism. This vision is what Salaam calls “arthouse meets hood.”
A U.S. Navy veteran, Salaam first found his voice on stage, performing at colleges, nightclubs, and eventually on HBO’s Def Poetry. His pivot to filmmaking began with a Hi-8 camera and a commitment to documenting marginalized voices, resulting in Lost in the Rubble: A Docu-Poem—a project that gained critical acclaim and led to his appearance at the 2007 Congressional Black Caucus alongside Reverend Jesse Jackson.
Salaam has built a two-decade career working across every phase of production. His gritty yet emotionally resonant style was first defined in Every Scar and Dimple, and has evolved into a slate that challenge stereotypes while staying rooted in Black identity and regional authenticity.
His recent documentary Spring and 3rd: The Story of the Yin Yang Café was selected by the BronzeLens Film Festival, awarded the Elevate Atlanta Art grant, and distributed by Dame Dash Studios. His latest feature Cut is a partnership with Big Oomp Films, distributed by Maverick Entertainment, and is currently streaming on Amazon Prime and Tubi. After spending 2 weeks on Tubi’s Most Popular List, Cut has opened the door for Malik to co-produce Strikers, as a Maverick Original.
Salaam operates outside the studio system with his own production company, owning and operating gear to self-produce at a high level. His mission remains clear: tell the stories that aren't being told, create multi-dimensional characters beyond the expected, and build something lasting from the ground up- no permission needed.

what i do...

To say I am self-taught is quite the exaggeration. I am a student of every project, every conversation, every piece of material I have absorbed along my journey. I have educated myself, and learned a little about a lot... and I still have many miles to go.

WRITER-DIRECTOR
My first love is the word. I have cultivated my voice, as a writer, starting with my career as a performance poet. It is through my command of the stage that I began to understand the complexities of how words connect with an audience. I take that skill set with me along the journey of dissecting my screenplays so they can be understood, first, by the talent and crew on set, and finally to the spirit of the viewer.

PRODUCER
My role as a producer is rooted in my need to never wait on permission. As an independent auteur, it has always been my responsibility to wear multiple hats. On any given production, I fill several roles- from crafty to location manager. I cast. I design looks for talent. I set up lights and run sound. I secure and manage my budget. Although, I am always excited to collaborate, I am grateful that my collaborations start with me having an understanding of everyone's role.

EDITOR
A film is, ultimately, made in the editing room. I have had the pleasure of editing most of my projects. For me, editing is an extension of the writing process. How footage is arranged can greatly impact the way words or an actor's performance is received by the audience. I believe this part of the process should be handled with great attention to detail and the precision of a sword master.
